About the area
The Rhodope Mountains are well known for their exquisite beauty & charm. According to Greek mythology The Rhodope Mountain is the birthplace of Orpheus and Euridica. The mountain is composed of a multitude of mountain chains and it is the most southerly range of the Balkan Peninsula. Some of its territory occupies the territory of Bulgaria and the rest of it is in Northern Greece. Pamporovo is only an hours drive from the Greek Border. This part of the Rhodope Mountain which is also known as Mid Rhodopes has for its administrative center the city of Smolyan. A great town offering shopping opportunities, restaurants, bars and outdoor cafes in the summer. The region is situated 250 km southeast of the capital of Bulgaria Sofia and 81 km from Plovdiv.
The highest peak in the range is, Big Perelik, and is at 2191 meters above sea level, and as part of the new 270 Million Euro investment In this area will be incorporated in the "Super Perelik Project" which, upon its completion in 5 years time, will make Pamporovo - Perelik - Smolyan the Chepelare area the biggest, mega-skiing resort in the country.
The plan provides for the northern slopes of Perelik to be developed as a vast, super-modern skiing area with 24 new lifts and over 55 km of new skiing pistes and, most importantley - without hotels and apartment complexes - in order to preserve the local nature. The hotel/apartment base will be in Pamporovo and Smolyan.
A cable gondola will link Pamporovo from Snejanka peak to Perelik and to Mechi Chal facilities above Chepelare thus creating a mega-complex with Pamporovo as its centre. A golf course is planned in the vast green areas between Pamporovo and Smolyan. To extend the summer activities here.
This part of the mountains is extremely beautiful. Unlike other bigger European mountains like the Alps, for example, where the mountain chains there are slanting, here they smoothly unfold in all directions and the climate is not at all severe. It is also renowned for being the most wind free ski resort in Europe. Century-old spruce forests grow all the way up the mountain and in vast quantities a the higher levels while beech and pine trees occupy the lower parts. The breathtaking views which opens out from the highest points of the mountain are really overwhelming. The climate In Pamporovo is mild. All the four seasons are normally offered throughout the year. The summers in Pamporovo are a great escape from the hot and steamy towns where temperatures can rise to 40 degrees. The average daily temperature is a pleasant 23 C. There are cool and calm evenings with low humidity and no biting insects. The winter is long but mild, as well, and the influence of the Mediterranean climate is greatly felt here . There is snow for about 120 and 170 days a year. The snow can heap up to 1-1.5 meters at the locations where the level above the sea reaches 1000 meters. And there is normally ½ inch of fresh powder most evenings. The average temperature in the winter in Pamporovo is about -5 °C and the resort in well known for its more than average amount of sunny days. In fact for the whole year the sunny days in this resort add up to more than 270 which characterizes the Rhodope Mountains as one of the sunniest mountain resorts in Europe. Having in mind all these things, together with the clean and fresh air, the mountain attracts many tourists world wide all year round.
